What is a boiler horsepower (BHP)?
Boiler horsepower is a measure of boiler output capacity. 1 BHP = 33,475 BTU/hr (hot water) or 34.5 lbs/hr (steam) "from and at 212°F."
What is meant by "from and at 212°F" when rating steam boilers?
It is a nominal rating used to measure the capacity of steam boilers. It standardizes operating conditions (212°F boiler feedwater, steaming at 0 PSIG) so different boilers can be compared uniformly.
What is boiler blowdown in a steam boiler?
There are two types: bottom blowdown and surface blowdown. Bottom blowdown removes heavy sludge, rust, and suspended solids that settle in the bottom of the boiler — typically performed once per day. Surface blowdown uses a dip tube just below the water line to siphon off the top layer where impurities float, controlling the water’s Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). It can be continuous or intermittent depending on controls.
Why is chemical treatment required in a steam boiler?
Chemical treatment prevents scale build-up and stops metal corrosion. Fresh make-up water contains dissolved minerals (calcium and magnesium) and dissolved gases (oxygen and acidic gases). As make-up water is continually boiled, minerals deposit on the tubes as an insulating scale, and liberated gases attack the steel. Water softening and chemical treatment safely manage these damaging processes.
What is a hot-water primary-secondary piping layout?
A primary-secondary arrangement uses two independent but interconnected loops. The primary loop circulates water through the boiler side using dedicated boiler pumps; the secondary loop circulates water through the building using building pumps. A short common pipe connects them, hydraulically decoupling the two pumping loops from each other.
